Free Essays on The First English Colonies In The New World
Colonization of the New World by the English, First Settlement in the New World The Englishââ¬â¢s first encounter with the new world ââ¬Å"Novus Mundusâ⬠was in 1497, just few years after Spainââ¬â¢s. John Cabot sailed the northeastern coast of North America, seeking to reach the orient through the New World, his voyage was unsuccessful. It was more than a hundred years before the English started colonizing and establishing themselves in the new world. The reason why English started to think about settling in the new world was because of wars and religious strife that were occurring in their own land. The economic needs were also great, because of the growing demand of wool, most of the crop fields were turned into fields to pastures for sheep. The food supply was decreasing as the population was growing; to some English the New World started to sound like a good place to go. Because England got such a late start in the colonization game, they couldnââ¬â¢t just set up their colonies wherever they wanted. Spain dominated South America, Mexico, the West Indies, the American Southwest, and Florida. The French held sway along North Americaââ¬â¢s major waterways. In addition, the dense forests and occasionally hostile Native American tribes prevented English settlers from moving westward past the Appalachian Mountains. The early English settlements were therefore concentrated along the eastern coast of North America. The first English settlement in the New World was called ââ¬Å"Jamestownâ⬠and it was located in Virginia. It is important to note that before this settlement the English had begun to settle, yet all of these efforts failed. The 105 original Jamestown colonists were all men. Jamestown was a business venture, not a place to raise a family. The colonists focused all their efforts on getting rich, neglecting to tend to any sort of agriculture. As a result, more than half of the colonists died of starvation within the first year. O... Annoying Professors
Despite their degrees and supposed wisdom some professors just donââ¬â¢t know how to teach. Their wisdom and knowledge is found to be lacking when it comes to identifying what their students need help with and how to teach them. This leaves students annoyed frustrated and angry and wishing with all their might that the class would soon be over. The most annoying of professors who leave students in a state of frustration are, commonly the following three types: ââ¬Å"The Confusing Babblerâ⬠, ââ¬Å"The Know-It-Allâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Useless Gitâ⬠. The Confusing Babbler presents a major problem for most students. The Confusing Babbler enters the classroom prepared to lecture, his students sit dreading it. As he babbles on about history facts he confuses one with another, does not correct his mistakes and disagrees with the textbook leaving his students wondering is the textbook or professor right, why does what the professor said today contradicts what he said yesterday and why did they even bother buying the textbook at all. The Confusing babbler will finish his lecture oblivious to the looks of bewilderment on his studentââ¬â¢s faces and will answer their questions with contradicting statements to his lecture which makes his students puzzled even more. The class will end, the students release a sigh of relief and go home and attempt to decipher and piece the lecture together and decode the course material. The Useless Git another type of annoying professor is known for his inability and useless attempts to effectively help his students. His lectures are long and boring, he assigns class work and homework, students turn it in and The Useless Git receives it, grades it and gives it back. Attempting to know what they did wrong or enlightenment of a broader understanding of the assignment the student asks The Useless Git questions pertaining to their work. The Useless Git answers the studentââ¬â¢s question with generic statements he answers all studentââ¬â¢s questions with, responses in generalities without going into detail. Corrects studentââ¬â¢s papers by highlighting areas where he believes there are problems without fully explaining what the problem is and does not correct every problem in the studentââ¬â¢s work leaving it up to the student to find the rest of the mistakes heââ¬â¢s left which, doesnââ¬â¢t work because the student has no idea whether what was done is wrong or not. The Useless Git in the eyes of students receives an F as a professor and has students wishing and praying that the class will soon end. The Know-It-All is the most annoying professor of the three. The Know-It-All is oblivious to his mistakes, refuses to be corrected, or accept opinions from anyone else. The Know-It-All knows every English Literature quote, knows how to write every essay perfectly and considers himself, knowing a better way than the textbook the class is given to work with. The Know-It-All will make several mistakes, answer questions incorrectly and still insist their right. If indeed the Know-It-All admitted to being wrong it would take half the class and half the class period to convince him. The Know-It-All is bored by his studentââ¬â¢s opinions and believes his opinions are the only correct ones and all others are wrong or gently needs to be corrected for his liking. Students begin to feel what is the point of attempting to interject their opinions or write papers since the Know-It-All will regard himself as the only correct one and disregard anything they have to say or write. Obviously some teachers are excellent they are clear and precise in their teaching, help their students to great outcomes and believe even their students can teach them something. But on the whole college professors with their high degrees are an annoying bunch having learned nothing from when they were studentââ¬â¢s what works or doesnââ¬â¢t, and believing that because they have already sat in their studentââ¬â¢s chairs they know all there is to know and more than their studentââ¬â¢s which is not always the case. College professors should remember the days when they were students in vivid detail and then perhaps they will become better teachers.

Globalisation and Chinaââ¬â¢s Environmental Problems Essay -- Impact USA o
Is the lifestyle of people in Europe and the USA a major cause of Chinaââ¬â¢s environmental problems? One of Chinaââ¬â¢s best successes has in turn been one of its biggest downfalls. One of the main problems is Chinaââ¬â¢s greatest success which has been its phenomenal economic growth. This is one of the main drivers of the current environmental problems that the country faces. Factories dump pollutants into the air and water. It is difficult to see the Chinese government making the significant sacrifices required to improve their environment if it means slowing down their economic growth. In order to understand why China is in such environmental difficulties we need to understand why the lifestyles of people in Europe and the US could be to blame. The first area to consider is the environmental issues that China is currently suffering with. Once this is established I can assert what impact the US and Europe has in relation to these issues and what actually causes them. In linking the events it will be easier to see the chain of events. To do this I am going to work backwards and understand the issues that exist within China and then secondly what they are a result of. This will give me the background of why Chinaââ¬â¢s environmental issues have become so dire. According to the Worldwatch Institute the rapid industrialization has polluted many lakes and streams resulting in chemical pollution and increased algae blooms leaving the water undrinkable. These combined issues are then causing knock on effects to the aquatic life by staving them of oxygen. Many areas are also suffering with an increase in dust storms; these have been a cause of over agricultural use. These increased storms would not cause many problems but now they can ... ... Andrew Carnegie
A man who had a goal and stopped at nothing to achieve It. Some call him a robber baron and others, a captain of industry. At thirteen years of age Carnegie had moved to America from Scotland. This move was exactly what was needed for Andrew Carnegie to begin building his empire and In doing so, contributing to society along the way. I respect Carnegie a great deal for his success and by no means, contribute his success to anything other than his determination, want and persistence.I feel Carnegie contributed a great deal to society. He has paved many ways and helped society evolve greatly. Many portray him as this monster who cared not for anyone except his money and success however, that is not the case. In my eyes, someone who comes from such a background as Carnegie had, should be proud of his accomplishments. Unfortunately, envy and jealousy are a part of human nature. We always want what we can't have yet, we can have most of the things we want but, to do so usually means we ha ve to work harder, think outside the box and take risks. We have to have he want. Carnegie did. I am baffled that more people cannot see the good that Carnegie has done. Most of the people in Carnage's time had jobs due to him. Now, they may not have been paid in fortunes but, if I remember correctly, Carnegie was not paid that way either in his early life. He started out in poverty and rose to the top. He worked in cotton mills with his father from dawn to dusk, making $1. 20 as a bobbin boy. Carnegie had a dream, and it was a big one. His intelligence and desire to learn are what helped make his empire. Carnegie was an Industrialist. He believed that the rich and wealthy had a duty to use their riches In ways that promoted the advancement of society. This Idea is what he referred to as the Gospel of Wealth. He wanted to give back and help those who wanted to help themselves. Carnegie believed that the lifestyles of wealthy and how they live actually benefits society. I also believe the same. It provides a vision for the poor to want to strive to. This vision is what separates the ones who wanted to better themselves from the ones who don't want to put in the work. Throughout his wealthy life, he gave so much to society. The best means of benefiting the community is to place within its reach the ladders upon which the aspiring can rise?free libraries, parks, and means of recreation, by which men are helped in body and mind; works of art, certain to give pleasure and improve the public taste; and public institutions of various kinds, which will improve the general condition of the people; In this manner returning their surplus wealth to the massif their fellows In the forms best calculated to do them lasting good. â⬠(Finer 30) There Is no disputing the fact that employees of his were not treated In the best says.He ran his factories In such a way that he was hated for It. Carnegie wanted his factories to run at the maximum. He was a brute of a boss but, so are many still stressful and harsh work environments. In fact, I would bet my life that there is abuse in the workplace still today. The differences are few between today and Carnage's time. He went about a lot of things in a very different way than most. In doing so, even with the harsh and abusive work environment, he still thought of the benefit of the people. The belief that it was his obligation to give back as much as he could. He always looked at the big picture of things. There were two sides of Carnegie. On the one, he was a very intense, brutal boss. He wanted the maximum output of most things. He was willing to do what needed to be done to succeed. He was a genuine businessman. On the other, he was a very intelligent, giving, and very caring man. He believed that anyone could make themselves a better person and by doing so would be contributing to society. Carnegie wanted a society where everyone strives for greatness, where all men could better themselves. He wanted to he lp this happen in NY way he was able to.He believed that contributions to helping those who wanted to improve was one of the greatest contributions of all. He wanted to see society succeed. He helped bring America to it's highly powerful level that it is at. ââ¬Å"There were the famous libraries-three thousand of them costing nearly sixty million dollars; there were the Carnegie institutes in Pittsburgh and Washington, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Hogue Peace Palace, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and the precedent-making Carnegie Corporation of New York, with its original enormous endowment of $125,000,000. â⬠Ornithologist. Mom) We all need and enjoy the resources of public libraries and a vast majority have been provided by Andrew Carnegie. Although he left a bitter taste for most when it came to his workers, his many other contributions and commitments should out way the distaste. Carnegie lived up to his beliefs at their fullest in his end of days. He l eft almost all of his fortune to philanthropies. Carnegie shows us that even the best of men with the greatest of ideals can fall victim to the temptations of wealth. However, his victory in he end, of not forgetting his beliefs , also shows us how theses failures can be turned into successes. In the elite group of the ââ¬Å"one percent,â⬠Carnegie was very much different from the majority. He felt compelled to do good with his success and fortune. He felt that benefiting society by any means was in fact, the greatest victory of all. I feel that this statement from Andrew Carnegie is one of great value and is an appropriate conclusion to my essay. Meet the day is not far distant when the man who dies leaving behind him millions of available wealth, which was free for him to administer during life, will pass away ââ¬Å"unwept, unhorsed, and unsung,â⬠no matter to what uses he leaves the dross which he cannot take with him.

Themes And Values Of Walt Disney s The Tempest
In the year of 1995, the release of the thirty-third film in the Walt Disney Animated Classic series created a substantial amount of controversy that has continued to this day. Many people think that Walt Disneyââ¬â¢s Pocahontas was a recreation of the classic Shakespearean play known as The Tempest. There seems to be apparent evidence for this case within the characterization and the story line. However, it can be difficult to fully see the relationship between both of these works without understanding the purpose behind each one. As a result, by reviewing the original themes and values that were apparent in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s final masterpiece, one will be able to see the validity of this argument and determine whether or not Disney tried toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The first evident piece of the characterization of civilization is portrayed through the representation of language and communication between Prospero and Caliban. In the opening act, Caliban was able to use h is local knowledge of the island to assist Prospero and help him survive after being exiled away by his brother, Antonio, who had taken away his power and shamefully exiled him out of Milan. In fact, without the help of Caliban, Prospero may not have survived. In return for the kindness of Caliban, Prospero decided that it would benefit Caliban to learn how to communicate using proper language skills (I.ii.517-519). Essentially, Prospero used his civilized mind to enrich the mind of Caliban with new thoughts and a new way of communication. Many of the representations dealing with civilization in this play revolve around the concept that new ideas will have a substantial benefit over the old ideas that are used as a representation of society. The idea of civilization coupled with the use of theatrical elements within this play allow the reader to be able to comprehend the comparison between classic Shakespearean works that have been modified and recreated to meet the needs of today ââ¬â¢s modern society. In other words, the plot and story line of many of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s plays have been
